Motorcycling,  why take a Basic Rider's Course?

We utilize the nationally recognized Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Basic Rider Course (BRC) training curriculum in our Michigan Department of State approved program.

Your successful completion of this State approved training  has the following benefits:

1) You can obtain your motorcycle endorsement after passing a written exam without the need and expense to take a skills-test,  commonly referred to as a "road-test."    2)  Operating a motorcycle without an endorsement has its problems--it is a misdemeanor and results in a court fine plus $300.00 in responsibility fees.

3) You learn or refresh basic motorcycle handling and safe operating skills.

4) Persons who have completed such training and that have a motorcycle endorsement are statistically less likely to be involved in an accident.

5) Some insurance companies extend an insurance premium discount on motorcycle insurance for completion of such training.

6)  Perhaps, most important of all, it is FUN to learn  how to ride a motorcycle and you can make new friends !

So what does a course cost ?  How long does it take?  How do you sign-up?

Your portion of the cost to take our State approved BASIC RIDER COURSE (BRC), which includes use of a motorcycle, is only $25.00.

The typical schedule is Friday evening from 6-9:30 P.M. for class room study, another 1.5-2 hours of classroom on Saturday,  approximately 4-hours of motorcycle training on Saturday (in two separate sessions) and another 4-hours of motorcycle training on Sunday.  Your Saturday and Sunday schedule will be assigned at the Friday night class.  For planning purposes, you should assume your range training could be assigned anytime 7:00 AM - 5:30 P.M. Saturday and Sunday.

The BRC classes  fill quickly and early registration is advised.  Admission is on a first to register first to receive services basis. Currently available training dates, subject to change, are listed on the online course application at the link below. When you complete the online course application, you will be automatically directed to the “PaySchools Online Payment Processing System” to collect payment by check or credit card. There is a section entitled ADD A STUDENT , when it asks what GRADE you are in, enter MSF and enter your name as you did on the application and then click the ADD NEW STUDENT BUTTON.   To learn what class dates are still available or to apply, click on:

Online Course Application

Until we receive your application AND $25 registration fee, we will not assign you a confirmation number assuring your admission to a particular class.

When we confirm a training date with you, a confirmation number will be provided.  If you do not have a confirmation number, you should not assume you are registered for a particular class.  Every effort is made to provide you admission into your preferred class date, however, we cannot guarantee a particular date. The $25.00 application fee is non-refundable.

You may wish to review the Basic Rider Course Handbook online.

The courses will be open to any person 15 years of age or older. Priority is given to Michigan residents.

Equipment you need for a class. A list of items that you will need for the class can be found here.  The program will provide the motorcycle for all basic rider courses.  If you are taking any course other than a basic rider course, you would need to supply your own motorcycles and provide a registration.

LOCATION: Effective 27 June 2008, Friday night classes will be held in the MEDIA ROOM at the Suttons Bay High School, 310 S Elm Street, Suttons Bay, Michigan.  When you arrive on Saturday and Sunday, you should report to the parking lot immediately behind the High School. Look for the large red container.

The Most Common Question: Can I be a walk-in even if a class is fully registered?

Absolutely, even though we show a class as having no openings, it is not uncommon for one or two people not to show-up. It is assumed that students who have not checked-in by 6:00 P.M. on Friday night will not be attending and that training slot is subject to immediate assignment.  Priority for such openings will be given to those who have pre-paid and are on our PRIORITY STAND-BY list; if no person on the priority stand-by list appears, then an unregistered walk-in will be selected.   Click on the online application link above for more details.

If you want to try to gain admission by being an unregistered walk-in, arrive by 5:30 P.M. Friday and, as soon as a coach arrives, advise the coach that you are a walk-in as we admit walk-ins in the order in which they check-in.   Call us ahead of time to confirm that a class is scheduled for the weekend you are considering.

If you have already been assigned a confirmation number to attend a particular class and you then gain entry to a different class by being a walk-in, the fee you paid to get a class confirmation number will not transfer to a walk-in enrollment.
